You had to earn Coach Powell's respect. It was something every kid at Moore craved, longed for, and strove to acquire. It takes a special man to inspire snot-nosed, top-of-the-world eighth graders to act respectably. It takes a special man to strengthen the character of an entire grade. It takes a special man to mold children into the adults they will become.

I don't know if Coach Powell realized just how special a man he was when he left this world, and I don't know if he realized how many of us he had influenced. I do know that I am so much the better for having worked my tail off for the respect he so lovingly bestowed on all who fought to earn it.
