Star Donuts

There's this thing that when you're the best of friends and only in town together for a short time, you plan and execute 5 AM donut dates. And I don't mean raging all night and stumbling into a Krispy Kreme before dawn. I mean being sure to go to bed at a reasonable hour in order to wake up way too early and carpool to the same shop with its assembled regulars. It's a mystery to me, and probably everyone else involved, why we started doing this, but now it's a thing. Once a thing, always a thing, and one day we'll be the ones going behind the counter to refill our own coffee.

We had our going-back-to-school 5 AM donut run yesterday. As we struggled to stretch conversation of the half-asleep to 6:00, we went around the table and shared wishes for this semester. Pass classes, set up jobs, figure out what we want to do - all were in accordance. Thinking back with a less zombied mind, when the heck did we get so boring?! Ben's secondary wish to wed a married woman was the only thing with even a tinge of oomph. Are the prospects of senior year, the "real world", and impending adulthood robbing us of our wild aspirations? Are we too serious now to run around in hobbit capes?

I take back my donut shop wish for a new one: to be delightfully un-boring.
